#deExtinction: "The American company #Colossal changed only 14 genes to produce its cute "#direwolf" puppies. Curiously, all 14 are genes with effects on the appearance of animals, being linked to the colour, thickness and length of the fur and the size of the animals.

Is #resurrecting a species now just #cosplaying an extinct animal with a current species? To top it off, George R.R. Martin himself - yes, the author of #GameofThrones - signs the scientific article as well. And he is an investor in the company. He compared the feat to a form of "magic". Only if it's to magically fatten his bank account even more."

“This is a designer dog. This is a genetically modified gray wolf,” says Jacquelyn Gill, a paleoecologist at the University of Maine, who has worked with Shapiro in the past but was not involved in this project. “I have more than 14 Neandertal genes in me, and we wouldn’t call me a Neandertal.” scientificamerican.com/article by @andreatweather.bsky.social‬

@david_megginson 2/2 Such promises act as a glue trap for the population. We don't learn about the suffering of the masses of cloned pigs that we abuse in animal factories. Even if the mammoths are just rapidly ageing, sick elephants: How much animal suffering. And what incalculable consequences for #habitats and #ecosystems! This is pure #supremacism, #nature as a colony to be exploited.
