Ron Franke<p>Sometimes by just showing up you win.</p><p>Kathy and I completed the Sprint distance Duathlon race as part of the Tri (Triathlon) Santa Cruz yesterday in Santa Cruz CA. There may have been 1000 participants, but not that many in the Sprint Duathlon, and of that, the large majority were women. Still, I showed up and came in 3rd in the men&#39;s group, quite surprisingly. I&#39;m choosing not to check, but my guess is that there may only have been 3 men in the Sprint Duathlon.</p><p>It was a lot of fun and I felt great at the finish and today.</p><p>For those that don&#39;t know, a Triathlon is a multi-sport race that includes swim, bike, and run segments. A Duathlon replaces the swim segment with an extra run segment. A Sprint distance Duathlon is 3, 12, and 3 mile segments.</p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Duathlon" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Duathlon</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Triathlon" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Triathlon</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/TriSantaCruz" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>TriSantaCruz</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/SantaCruz" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>SantaCruz</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Sports" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Sports</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Exercise" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Exercise</span></a></p>
Ron Franke<p>We did it. Completed our first Duathlon at Tri Santa Cruz coming in at 2:13:04. Did better than expected in the first run. Faster than expected in the bike. And ran low on energy half way through the last run. All in all it was fun.</p><p>Proves that we can achieve more than we might have thought when we set our minds to it and when we set reasonable expectations. Also good to have a support group in our Tri Club and a great wife.</p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/TriSantaCruz" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>TriSantaCruz</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Triathlon" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Triathlon</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Duathlon" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Duathlon</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Running" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Running</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Biking" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Biking</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/SantaCruz" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>SantaCruz</span></a></p>
Ron Franke<p>Tri Santa Cruz Race - 1 Day, 15 Hours, and 18 Minutes from now - Sunday August 6.<br /><a href="https://runsignup.com/Race/CA/SantaCruz/TriSantaCruz" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">runsignup.com/Race/CA/SantaCru</span><span class="invisible">z/TriSantaCruz</span></a></p><p>Kathy and I are doing this as a Duathlon which will be our first multi-sport race. Instead of the normal Triathlon of a swim, bike, and run, we&#39;re doing a run, bike, and run at the Sprint distance which is 3, 12, and 3 miles.</p><p>Also, this Sunday, race day, is our anniversary. Apparently this anniversary year gift is a Triathlon Race, kind of a neat gift to each other.</p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Triathlon" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Triathlon</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Duathlon" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Duathlon</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/TriSantaCruz" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>TriSantaCruz</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/SantaCruz" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>SantaCruz</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Running" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Running</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Biking" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Biking</span></a></p>
Ron Franke<p>Biking versus running miles.</p><p>I&#39;ve mentioned before that I&#39;m registered for my first Duathlon next month. I&#39;m doing the Sprint distance, which is a run, bike, run at about 3, 12, and 3 miles for this race.</p><p>Since I&#39;m not really working today, I decided to find out how many equivalent running miles it would be if the bike portion was a run as well. I&#39;ve run in many races up to a half marathon.</p><p>So I was curious, am I doing the equivalent of a half marathon in this duathlon?</p><p>As with most things, it turns out, the answer somewhat varies. The common answer is apparently that 1 running mile is about 2 to 3 biking miles depending on calories burned and some other factors.</p><p>So my 3, 12, 3 race is between 10 and 12 running miles. Not quite a half marathon.</p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/triathlon" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>triathlon</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/duathlon" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>duathlon</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/running" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>running</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/biking" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>biking</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/MultiSport" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>MultiSport</span></a></p>
Ron Franke<p>Kathy and I completed our third Duathlon three sport practice session yesterday with the Triathlon training group and club of which we&#39;re members. We&#39;re both signed up for the run, bike, run Sprint distance duathlon race next month in Santa Cruz. Prior to those 3 sessions we did 2 of the 3 sections as part of training.</p><p>I&#39;m still getting used to multi sport. Prior to the pandemic I ran in a number of races up to half marathon. And, I&#39;ve biked some reasonably long distances. But, I&#39;ve never put them together until now.</p><p>I&#39;m finding that I &quot;should&quot; up my training by running and riding one more day during the week, even if it&#39;s a short distance. Unfortunately work and other commitments get in the way.</p><p>One lucky thing is that we live on the California coast so we don&#39;t have the heat problems that most of the country is experiencing.</p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/triathlon" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>triathlon</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/duathlon" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>duathlon</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/running" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>running</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/biking" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>biking</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/MultiSport" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>MultiSport</span></a></p>
Ron Franke<p>Another AI ChatGPT Experiment - Duathlon Training</p><p>I&#39;m signed up for my first duathlon. It&#39;s a sprint distance bike and run race which is typically a 5K run, a 20K bike, and a 2.5K run.</p><p>I asked ChatGPT the following question: &quot;as a training coach what is the best training schedule for a sprint distance bike run duathlon&quot;.</p><p>I understand that when asking a question it is useful to put in a context, in this case, &quot;as a training coach&quot;.</p><p>It put out a pretty good 12 week training schedule. While people have differing views about training programs, this was at minimum a good starting point for whatever changes one deemed fit.</p><p>I&#39;m no AI evangelist, but my limited experiments so far indicate that when AI is used properly, and the results are verified, AI can be a useful tool.</p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/ArtificialIntelligence" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ArtificialIntelligence</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>AI</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/OpenAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>OpenAI</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/ChatGPT" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ChatGPT</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Software" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Software</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/technology" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>technology</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/duathlon" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>duathlon</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/triathlon" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>triathlon</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/sprintdistance" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>sprintdistance</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/running" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>running</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/biking" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>biking</span></a></p>
