Fields of Depth.

These were taken half an hour before the dolphin photos posted a few days ago.

A seagull is diving into the water at left with a rocky headland behind them. The bay continues at right, a hill in the far distance. A branch in the near foreground divides the scene in half vertically, blurred by it's proximity to the camera. Landscape image converted to black and white.

A fallen branch in the near foreground spans the upper left to centre lower right, gnarled and weathered. It's from the same vantage point as the former image - the headland and water blurred in the background. Landscape image converted to black and white.

Escheresque Webbing.

No spiders in sight.

A spiderweb attached to a small branch radiates outward from the centre left to the far right, top and bottom edges. Several radial sections have been enhanced with 'double weaving' making a geometric snaking pattern along those branches of the web. Although some regularity is evident, other parts seem to wander randomly.

Dry Thistle Heads.

The swirl of thistledown in the centre caught my attention.

A dry thistle head in the late stages of flowering, a swirl of soft thistle down revealed in the centre of the dry petals. Other heads blurred below, the background lost in focus. Lndscpe layout done in black and white.

Bull Rushes.

I stopped by this waterhole hoping to get some dragonfly/bird/wildlife pics, but none about that day. Liked the deep brown of the bull rush head against the verdant green leaves.

A single brown bull rush head amongst it's tall thin leaves. It's a close up, with only the top of the head visible, the leaves in the foreground and background out of focus. Very blurry background.

Sun drenched hill across the river Derwent.

Late afternoon sun glows on the rocky embankment of the river Derwent, with long shadows cast over tree covered hills behind from the undulating terrain. Suburbia in the foreground on this side of the river, low apartment buildings and large fuel silos sidelit, a contrast against the emptiness on the opposite side.

Silken Flow.

Takumar 4/200mm.

The tide washes gently over a small rough stone embedded in the sand, a wavelet of lustrous motion frozen in time like a silken curtain. Bubbles in the whitewater on either side, the foreground blurring into the wet reflection. Blurry background.

Frolicking Dolphins.

Takumar 4/200mm.

Three dolphins launch vertically, the water streaming from their bodies. The right one is completely out of the water and most of it's body is above the horizon line. Low tree covered hills in the distance.

The same three dolphins from the first image, a split second later. All three are airborne. They have twisted in the air as if to look at the camera, the right two near colliding. Two more have emerged, one on each side.

Thanks nature. I had a longer lens, the right focus, enough light and I was moments earlier thinking of the local pro photographer's dolphin photo, having just seen them on the path to here.

And then this happens.

(Pics are phone photos of the camera display. Will be much better later, could be a while as moving is a ... nuisance).

"Take my picture!"

This little bird wouldn't sit still for long, chirping away and flitting between the branches. The focus is soft (at best) but the pose made it worthwhile.

Takumar 2.8/120mm, cropped and scaled down.

A bird sits on a twiggy bare branch, with other bare branches framing it against the ocean and rocky shoreline below. It has white/pale grey body feathers and grey brown wings and back. It faces forward to the left, it's head and body tilted toward the camera, the beak open mid-chirp. Focus is shallow and some of the bird is clear, the background blurry.

Living on the Edge, a'la Pacific Gull style.

Watched this seagull for quite a while before it stood up to reveal those 2 well camouflaged eggs.

Was thinking at the time how harsh an environment that particular spot is - facing directly into the cold south westerly winds here in the roaring forties. Yet it was ambivalent, after this shot, turning to face directly into the wind.

A Pacific Gull stands over it's 2 camouflaged eggs, looking into the nest as if making a decision. The nest of straw is atop a rocky outcrop, with ocean lapping below. The view is steeply downward from a high bluff above.
