Editorial: Solar installations are plummeting and California regulators are to blame latimes.com/opinion/story/2023

Preliminary data from the industry shows a steep drop in installations and widespread job losses since April. That’s when the PUC’s changes to the program took effect, slashing the compensation new solar customers receive for the excess power they feed into the grid… disappointing to see the outcome of state regulators’ wrecking-ball approach play out so predictably.

THIS is why we took out loans against our house to fund rooftop solar and a battery!

Not only is our system 100% clean and fossil fuel free, but it cut our electric bill to $12 per month! Oh yeah, and the president’s recent law, (Inflation Reduction Act) gave us a tax rebate of 30% on the cost of the system!

If you live in a mostly sunny place, and you can swing it, DO IT!

Arizona’s biggest utility, for instance, gave millions of dollars to groups that helped elect two commissioners — and then refused to acknowledge that spending for years. The new commissioners later voted to slash incentives.

“That may be my biggest concern — that wide-open door for by utilities,” Heern said.

Today our solar roof panels delivered 52 kWh to our battery and the community grid. All of our own power needs only used up 9.6 kWh. We are so glad we used our savings and took out loans to build this system. We are thrilled to be producing, and using clean power!

Last July we refinanced our home and took out an additional loan to pay for a solar rooftop power system and battery. Yesterday, (a clear but chilly day) our SunPower designed system produced 45 kilowatt hours (kWh) in nine hours. It was used as follows for 24 hours:

13 kWh for home use
13 kWh to the battery storage
19 kWh sold to the grid

This has been the best investment we’ve ever made aside from buying a home to live in. It is mind-blowing how much free power is coming down from the sun every day and we are grateful to have a way to use as well as create clean energy.

The 30% rebate we got on the entire system, (from the recently expanded, Federal, Investment Tax Credit really really helped us finance this project!

If you’re interested in pursuing solar power yourself I’m glad to share what I learned in the process. I don’t gain anything by sharing my experience but the planet will!
