@raucao @debacle Another anecdote: A friend of mine in the #Philippines couldn't connect to my #XMPP server in #Singapore, *until* he turned on a VPN with an exit node in Singapore. There's all sorts of strange QOS rules lurking in the various ISPs' routers here in Asia.
@debacle @raucao @prosodyim I'm OK with all these hostnames being split up in XMPP, but as to using all those non-443 ports... sooner or later, a "standard" #XMPP server will surely heavily use ALPN and port 443.
@debacle @alienghic After many days of discussions, we have come up with a strategy that is acceptable to both ATM and Cross Signing proponents. We think we can implement Cross Signing as an optional add on to ATM. Eventually this separation could allow using OpenPGP keys or DIDs (decentralized identifiers) as identity keys.
That's just the "normal" #nginx domain, location and #reverseProxy stuff. I don't have a good example at hand (we have it at work, but the git is not yet public, sorry), maybe others can point to a good tutorial?

@Linux ideally switch to providers that don't demand any #PII like @monocles, which not only will onlynvomply with duely submitted subopenas in #Germany and also can only submit data they actually have.
And if you really care, you'll use real #E2EE LIKE #PGO/MIME (#encrypted #eMail) & #XMPP+#OMEMO so there's only encrypted jibberish at the providers' side.
@david_chisnall my #XMPP server does have STUN and TURN. Never saved me though.
So installed prosody on my small personal instance and finally run my own #XMPP server. This was surprisingly simple and seems pretty lightweight . Well I don’t know if I did it right 
but it seems to work.

In #XMPP encrypted groups, we often have to introduce our new devices and this creates a lot of noice. There is mainly two approaches we are considering to fix this issue in Prav.
So far the poll is favoring ATM, but I hope more people will vote for cross signing.
This is one crucial difference Prav has compared to most other #FreeSoftware projects, the community / users are the decision makers for such things, not developers.

I tried out the #ooni network tester app from #FDroid. I have good connectivity here in #Malaysia, both from a cellular SIM card connection, and the monastery wifi (a fiber internet connection).
But alas, the Ooni tests don't test for #XMPP, in their instant messaging apps testing! Only #Facebook, #Signal, Telegram, and Facebook Messenger are tested for, apparently. I do have trouble with XMPP, on the fiber internet here. Insidiously, brief XMPP text messages can be sent, but any video memo (say, 40MB in size, about 4 min worth of video) will only 1% upload, then get stuck. Attempts to resend will keep getting stuck. It seems that the XMPP traffic gets throttled to nothing after a small amount of data is sent: say, 400kb or so. I *can* send these video memos from my cellular SIM card connection.
I wish Ooni could have warned me about this, as it caused a friend to not receive a video memo for about 10 days, until I caught on to what was happening.
